i hate bandom.

phaballa made a post about how bandom guys being gay with each other onstage is as offensive as blackface, and a buncha people commented, i'm sure you've all seen it.

and now bandom's oppressed by fandom at large, and if being gay onstage is exploitative then so is slashfic, and the fundamental point of all RPS is seperating the person from the role so if you hate fallout boy's music but still fan them b/c they gay all over each other that's totally the same thing, and OH GOD MAKE IT STOP.

i just can't STAND it. and to be honest with you, it's not the music. i've heard maybe six songs by the aforementioned bands and one is sort of okay and the others, eh, whatever. and do i care that they french each other on stage? no. i could give a flying fuck. let 'em! but sweet god in heaven, their fans are going to drive me insane. maybe there are two or three people in bandom who are reasonable and like the music (pete wentz's mom?), and i'm sure those three people are about five seconds away from a homicidal rampage right now, because believe me, i know their pain.

after all, i am in supernatural fandom.

oh, probably. there are likely people out there who are seeing them do these things and thinking, "gosh, i guess guys kissing isn't so bad." and good for them.

all the people around HERE are ALREADY okay with guys kissing, and MORE than okay, and they are having the same problem that sections of supernatural have, vis a vis what is an actual gay couple and what is men being affectionate toward each other.

danny, i have no idea if you think i'm one of the reasonable bandomers or not, but to me, the facts are as follows: a) there are people who are actively trying to make other people feel bad about the bands they enjoy, be it for musical or other reasons; b) there are fans who are really, really touchy about the fact that people are making fun of bandom, sometimes even when the fun is being made without malicious intent; c) i am sick to death of BOTH SIDES of this not-so-little spat.

phaballa's post, in my opinion, addresses a slightly different, more specific issue, and for the most part, the comments i'm seeing in the posts by bandslashers are not irrational flappings about w/r/t bandom feeling oppressed. i'm seeing a lot of attempts at actual discussion, which i'm assuming was the intent of the original post.

but that's because it IS okay to make sweeping statements like that about band fans - or at least the ones that would espouse that kind of logic. fannish entitlement is a really, REALLY insidious and prevalent disease, and bandom has it in spades. it seems like every time i see a bandom wank come up, the majority of bandom folks talk like they're the only ones to ever have been told that they shouldn't like what they like, that nobody else was ever told their writing was intrusive, that the wide internets has never categorized an entire fandom as being bad/wanky/irritating. that nobody else has ever signed onto a fandom b/c they loved it and suddenly people started defriending them.

yeah, some people hate bandom. people are entirely entitled to hate bandom if they want to. i haven't seen a single case of anybody coming into bandom journals or communities to tell them they suck, but if i did, my advice would be to ban them and forget it.

bandom seems to be furious that people don't like them. well... that's life, man. ask RPS writers, or harry potter fandom, or hell, popslash people from back in the day. people don't like you? that's the way it is.

now, if LJ started banning you for writing bandslash, or bandom journals/communities were being trolled by assholes telling you to stop writing, that's when i'd have your back. that shit does not fly.

but bandom's rights do not include me biting my tongue about what i think about it. i'm allowed my opinion. i really am sorry if that opinion offends you, but i haven't heard anything to change it yet.

oh man. I don't like any of the music, but having been a fan of rock/metal music for many, many years and knowing just how homophobic it was/sorta still is? anything that changes that is ok with me, y'know? it's refreshing to read in metal magazines open condemnation of the people who call MCR or whoever "fags" because that wasn't happening before. people expressing those opinions weren't being called out and now they are and I applaud the attitude change.

I had a nightmare last week in which every single person on livejournal became obsessed with bandom and would talk about nothing else. It was TRAGIC.

I have no interest in bandom as I barely know who anybody is any more. I buy the occasional cd, usually for an old group I like; and I listen to the radio when I drive...I'm normally too busy working to follow music like I used to. What little spare time I have is mostly for reading.

But I have to admit, of all the fandoms in which I've participated or am peripherally aware of, "bandom" is the most annoying with their whining, bitching, and sense of martyred entitlement to whatever the heck it is they want. And I'm in SPN *and* HP, both of which are chock full of catfighting prima donnas, so that says something.

I've seen a few posts about this pop up on my flist tonight, and fled far and fast; but I read yours because a) it's *you* and bound to be well-put and entertaining (yes, I'm ass-kissing, in hopes of getting your spotted underpants icon, that's my favorite) and b) your entry tag amuses me muchly every time I see it. *laughs*

I browsed through some of the comments and just don't get wtf so many people are so touchy about. I like rps, but if they don't-so what? As long as I can still read it *somewhere*, I'll do that, and they can go do their own thing. I *do* prefer my rps with balanced characterization, hence my annoyance with the almost constant stream of adorably-friendly-to-the-point-of idiocy!Jared/complete-and-utterly-to-blame-asshole/bitch/jerk!Jensen fics that are being written; but I *am* capable of grasping that it's *all* fiction, even the best fics.

You wanna read bandom? (Well, not *you*, you-don't seize up, it's the hypothetical you.) Go right ahead, no skin off my nose and doesn't cost me a thing. Knock yourselves out. Why would you care if I like it or not, or if I criticize you or not? It's not like my opinion validates-or invalidates-you.

One thing I've noticed and commented on to friends before is how little attention is paid to characters who are actually gay. For instance, Jack on Dawson's Creek is openly gay, but not much fic is written about him compared to Dawson and Pacey, etc. It's like it's not fun if there's no challenge. *is puzzled*

You got a fandom with enough boy!touching and affection in it to lend a bit of realism to your rps fics? Be appreciative, don't lose sight of the fact that the fics are all *fiction*, and quit squabbling over stupid stuff, good grief.

...You know, whenever I've seen "I hate [x] fandom" and it's coming from someone I know (even in the vague internet definition of "know"), I assume they are talking about the crazies, the batshit tinhats, the whiners and complainers, because I tend to assume that I am reasonable and therefore not someone worth hating for just being in [x] fandom.

I only have ever been offended/hurt when I am guilty of that behavior that has apparently earned that person's disdain (or sometimes just think I might be) and, upon gaining some sort of clarification/explanation from the person, sometimes -- sometimes -- it has caused me to re-evaluate my behavior.

...which is my long-winded way of saying that, if I were a bandom-er, I would not immediately assume that you were talking about me and jump in to take offense. But apparently you were very correct about them being touchy.

i'm saying that if there are people in bandom who are not convinced that they should be able to say anything they want and have no consequences for it, i haven't met them.

the people on my flist are not exempt. i have two bandomers (that i know of) friended and they are both here in comments telling me that i'm a monster. one other bandomer who had me friended is also here, singing the same song. the remaining one has now defriended me, and called me lame in her own journal.

bandom is touchy about their fandom to the point of crazy. i had no problem with bandom until they started shrieking about how maligned they all were. it got to the point that i started defriending them, and yesterday, what happened with phaballa's post, somebody called them out and it was INSTANT wank. it's like a who's who of wank in her comments on the FIRST PAGE. i snapped.

and of course, here they all are, telling me that i'm a bitch. i repeat: the BANDS, i don't care about. let 'em do whatever they want. their FANS, on the other hand, are makin me crazy.
