i hate bandom.

phaballa made a post about how bandom guys being gay with each other onstage is as offensive as blackface, and a buncha people commented, i'm sure you've all seen it.

and now bandom's oppressed by fandom at large, and if being gay onstage is exploitative then so is slashfic, and the fundamental point of all RPS is seperating the person from the role so if you hate fallout boy's music but still fan them b/c they gay all over each other that's totally the same thing, and OH GOD MAKE IT STOP.

i just can't STAND it. and to be honest with you, it's not the music. i've heard maybe six songs by the aforementioned bands and one is sort of okay and the others, eh, whatever. and do i care that they french each other on stage? no. i could give a flying fuck. let 'em! but sweet god in heaven, their fans are going to drive me insane. maybe there are two or three people in bandom who are reasonable and like the music (pete wentz's mom?), and i'm sure those three people are about five seconds away from a homicidal rampage right now, because believe me, i know their pain.

after all, i am in supernatural fandom.

I'm going to kind of echo everything you're saying, though I suspect I'm far less bandom-identified in Danny's brain (for which I am thankful at the moment). And as it is late and I am tired and have approximately zero time, I'm going to have to avoid the rest of ye olde discussione happening below. I suspect that you and I are on different sides of phaballa's post, but hey, that never stopped anybody from being nice and having a lovely discussion.

For the next two days, unfortunately, yes. Hopefully this weekend I will have enough time to sit down, read *everything*, and make an informed and possibly relevant comment on this whole shebang. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything at all before having a chance to absorb the full discussion, but teaspoon's comment was the one that most resonated with me, and as with many discussions on LJ, I have a tendency to leap before I look.

Though I might not say "uncalled for" -- as with everything else that happens on LJ, we are all, of course, entitled to our own opinions, and it would be vastly hypocritical of me to say "hey Danny, don't say that", when I have personally said numerous things that are unpopular/apparently offensive.

you don't get to do that, man. you don't get to take a stab at me and then run away pretending nothing happened. as i am trying to explain to the bandom people in this very post, your actions have consequences. you can say anything you want, but when people get angry at you, you better be willing to bear that.

I have no intention of pretending nothing happened -- I just don't have time to reply in detail or in a reasonable manner right now. If you'd like, you can keep your jousting gear on and we can go at it on Monday when I finally am able to spend time at a computer that is not at work. I am interested in this whole discussion, but life, it is Le Suck right now as far as granting me time for things that are not in the set [work, show, sleep]. I hope you can understand.

And believe me, I am willing to bear as much anger as you're willing to dish out -- and have done in the past (though not, I think, from you). I know you're intelligent enough to recognize differences of opinion (i.e. about the level of exploitation of Stage Gay) for what they are -- I just found myself offended by the sweeping nature of "i hate bandom" and the following commentary on the behavior of the fandom, when I personally have never seen fannish entitlement coming out of bandom that is in any way greater than the fannish entitlement coming out of other fandoms (including Supernatural). Defensiveness, maybe, but not entitlement.

thanks for saying what you did. i agree, for the purposes of the discussion going on in the comments of this entry, it does not matter what you think of phaballa's post, simply what you think about the right of bandom-affiliated fans to dissent and engage in discussion with the original post.
