i was just talking to
thenyxie about adam, and about how while i do love the bejesus out of him for his sexy filterless diva qualities, i have Many Thoughts in my music nerd brain about him. i love music. i've made an informal study of music for a long time and if you have Thoughts about adam's musical skills and stratagems, you should comment below.
as an appetite whetting, here are three songs adam usually performs (two covers and one original) that have been totally rearranged just for kicks. because when you're a musician and not just a performer, you do amazing shit like this for funsies.
mad world, but funked up and rocked out.
wwfm, but stripped down acoustic and zero falsetto.
and then just in case by some horrible crime you missed it, whole lotta love, but dreamy drugged out vocal tantra.

I do like his rendition of Mad World. Would love to hear that without the background noise. Also, the Marble Bar is freaking tiny, talk about intimate show.

Date: 2010-03-09 01:55 pm (UTC)i love that he played the tiny show. that's what you do when you want to experiment and see how it works on your audience with your own eyes. adam played a thousand tiny shows like that before he hit the big time, and i love that he felt like he needed to go back to it. musician.

Date: 2010-03-09 12:39 pm (UTC)I'm not a music nerd at all. I love what I listen to but if you start asking me details about why I love my choices or what genres I'd got nothing but handsshrug to give you. What I find hilarious is that I actually love a lot of his songs which I never expected to do. His music choice is generally not mine AT ALL. I fell into fandom because his as you said his sexy filterless diva qualities. I like when people say what the want and do what they want and f* common opinion. Or something alike it.
My favourite band is Rammstein and they suck at fan communication, and fan treatment (I'll keep it short here). But they put on awesome shows, their lyrics are vastly different between songs and themes and they do their thing and couldn't care less it seems whether us fans love or hate it. Which pisses me off at the same time as I like it.
So yeah, his self is what brought me here but his music skills is what keeps me around.

Date: 2010-03-09 02:04 pm (UTC)he's not the best musician right now. he's got lots to learn, especially about his voice and what he can make it do, what will sound good when he does it, where's a good place to improvise on a song when he's in the middle of singing it. but the thing that kills me is that he's TRYING. he's not afraid to take risks. sometimes he tries something and it sounds fucking amazing, sometimes it sounds like crap. he doesn't care. he's out there trying shit on.
when he takes this album of his on tour, he'll be using that time to play around with more covers, more variations on his songs. when he was on the idols tour, you could almost watch him learning how his voice works, how far he could push and still have something left the next day.
his voice is his instrument, and it is un by god believable. it's a gift. and the more he learns how it functions, the longer he spends singing his fucking heart out, the better he's gonna get. his second album is going to murder us all.
adam's disdain for his IEMs is a big deal to me, because i want to know more. he always yanks one out, and he always gets a billion times better when he does. is it cutting out his treble? is the occlusion hurting his jaw? is he just pissed because can't hear the audience? some combination! idk. but i wish to know. somebody ask him this shit.

(also dsdfghj his dorky, hiccupy laugh after he intros Tommy.)

Date: 2010-03-09 03:21 pm (UTC)I love musical experimentation. And, different types of music - I was raised on everything from Cream and Rolling Stones, the Beatles, to Procul Harem, The Doors, etc.
(My dad used to pull out records for HOURS and say 'now here is this, and they were doing this thing that time...and listen to it closely) *eyes music collection* eclectic is an apt description of what I find appealing.
That Adam is experimenting and saying 'ooooh, can I DO THIS?' is wonderful and really refreshing - we are seeing him work things out and have a process when too much of what we see nowadays is 'here is the song...you can have a remix later.' Not enough people are fiddling around with their sound. *shakes head*
So yes, I would say he is definitely a musician. :) And it's lovely.

Date: 2010-03-10 01:41 am (UTC)oh my god can you imagine adam with a full orchestra. he's already done it once for that disaster movie but what if he worked with a real scorer on something he got to do just because he wanted to? aigh. nggh. give it.
sorry. i'm somewhere else now.

Date: 2010-03-10 02:26 am (UTC)Awesomeness= returning the favor. My dad and I still have days where we say 'here, LISTEN TO THIS' and spend hours putting different albums on. I have gotten him into some stuff that he wouldn't have expected. *cackles*
Then there is my whole THING with musicals, for which I give my grandmother a LOT of credit. *g* And consequently I have TONS of them, and Bollywood music.
*pauses to take in the visual and auditory results possible with Adam and an orchestra...*
......
*still absorbing*
I'm okay...really...
Maybe if we suggest it politely? And aren't shrieking with glee in the background?

Date: 2010-03-09 03:53 pm (UTC)1) He isn't afraid to break out from genre. He wants to be known as the guy who can do everything (and thanks to incredible vocal chords he can!). So he experiments. Sometimes it's genius, sometimes it goes wrong, but he never stops trying
2) He;s a 'put on a show kinda girl'. The way he sings WWFM at Leno vs Ellen vs The View vs Gridlock vs Marble Bar. They are all subtle (or not) different variation, which are very aware of the audience.
3) He's intensely committed to the lyrics of every song that he sings and it shows. One of the criticisms levied at him is that he isn't a songwriter, and therefore can't identify with lyrics. I call bull! Every single song (including, but not confined to the ones he co-wrote) are songs he can connect with on some levels. He's a thinker when it comes to the songs he performs.
OK TLDR... but I have thoughts about Adam!

Date: 2010-03-10 01:54 am (UTC)2. his tour is going to be a big fucking deal, you know? i'm not surprised it's taking time to figure it out - what he can afford, how much he can get away with, how balls-out he can make some songs and where he can dial it straight down into something gorgeous. planning! effort! detail! and all in order to provoke a reaction in an audience that thinks they know what to expect from him. do want.
3. anybody who thinks adam can't connect to songs needs to sit down, listen to broken open and SHUT. THE FUCK. UP.

I really love the originals, and then he twists them around and it's amazing in a whole new way and alsndkasjfnsklanf; I APPROVE. \o/ I have no Deep Thoughts about music, but I sure as hell enjoy listening to Adam and watching him experiment with music. <3333333333

Date: 2010-03-10 01:32 am (UTC)As far as IEMs go, having both your ears plugged really affects your ability to hear your own voice, because all of a sudden you're hearing it from the inside of your head instead of the outside. I wouldn't be surprised if it's messing with his ability to tell if his tone is any good, because sometimes what happens is that sounds that seem like they're bouncing around a lot inside your head sound thinner on the outside because less of it is getting out. But honestly I have no idea.
In conclusion, I love that Adam is remixing his own songs even more than I love Kris's tendency to do nothing but mashups in concert.

Date: 2010-03-16 07:16 pm (UTC)With Adam, I'm excited to see what he's got coming next (granted, my Itunes is like "WTF?! THIS IS THE SAME SONG, WOMAN! WHY DO YOU HAVE 5 VERSIONS OF THIS?"), because I know it's not going to be anything like what I've heard before. It bugged me at first that WWFM was the only one getting tweaked, but now that I've seen/heard the acoustic SW and DTRH (which is my new musical lover), I'm pretty sure we'll see different versions of Everything before he's done with this album.
I think part of it also seems to be him keeping things fun for himself. If he did the songs the same way every time, he'd get bored, just like if he wore the same outfit every day. He's basically redressing the songs so that he can ooh and at at it along with everyone else.
To me, between theater and Idol, he hasn't had a whole lot of say in getting to change things up. Theater, sure, you can put your take on who the character is in to the performance, but in the end? Everything is planned out for you: Where you move, when you do it, what you're saying when you move, how you're saying it, what song it leads in to, what the notes are in the song, etc. It's a very paint-by-numbers situation. Idol was kind of the same thing, with a little more freedom when it came to picking what version of each song he want wanted to do, but in the end there were still a lot of limitation on what could/couldn't be done in relation to Idol's demographic, and FOX's "family programming" and everything like that.
I don't know, I think that a lot of Adam doing different versions is also kind of like when a baby learns to walk. They spend a lot of time just wandering around, trying to see what everything looks like from their new vantage point, because things have been put in a completely new perspective. Adam's doing that with his songs now, because he has even more control over them than he did in the studio because it's (literally) his show now.
*shrugs* That's just my opinion though. Sorry this is so long, I like talking about music.
