i don't know what they're trying to accomplish with this, but there is a proposed bill in ohio that would require women who want abortions to get the permission of the baby's father.

well. for our next political trick, we'll be voting on a law that suggests that women's minds and souls are their own, but their bodies will belong to the government for the good of society.

oh wait. same thing.

The fact that it's my state that this bill was proposed in makes me physically ill.

the likelihood of it being passed is probably about a zillion to one. the defeat of this is probably intended to be a stepping stone to some other legislation that's less draconian.

HOWEVER.

one of the purposes is probably to get a feel for how much of a stink would be raised. you say you live in ohio? that's AWESOME news. tell everybody you know and write letters. a LOT of letters. i will even buy you stamps.

Undoubtedly, though it's no less disgusting.

That sounds like a marvelous idea, I know the women in my family alone will be pissed beyond belief-- and I'd rather not sit on my ass and do nothing.

As it is, I don't even live in Ohio (hell, I don't even live in the States; I'm Canadian) but that pisses me off like nothing else. According to this article, if a woman is pregnant as a result of a rape, she must "present a police report if they want to "prove" that the pregnancy was a result of rape or incest"? *rage!face*

If I lived in Ohio, I'd be writing letters to every person I'd ever met, telling them to oopose this thing.

Ugh. This is sickening.

And if abortion were even the real issue for them, maybe they should do something useful that might cut down on the number of cases where women felt like they had to have abortions? Like work to lessen the ever-widening gap between the incomes of the poor and the rich in this country, stop trying to eliminate sex education in schools, stop trying to get rid of access to contraception and promote funding research into better contraceptives, and work to promote the equality of women? This just shows that it's not even really about abortion for them, it's (probably solely) about putting control over women and over reproduction in the hands of men.

Oh for fuck's sake! I am so sick of this caveman bullshit. How about this? If the father says no to the abortion lets just go ahead and develop a procedure for the fetus to be transferred to his body so that he can go ahead and carry the baby for months and then push it out of his ass.

Um, hello. I am obviously in a MOOD.

What utter and complete insanity. Holy crap. Apparently they want to force women to carry what amounts to a parasite around in their gut for nine months for the benefit of daddy -- because it sure as hell isn't to the woman's benefit. That just grosses me out.

Aside! I am back in Edmonton now, if you would like to meet for coffee someplace at some point. :)

And yet... you probably wouldn't see something like this offered up by a woman. Women will draw the line SOMEWHERE. Men, now... they'll stop only when they can move the woman's mouth like a puppet and make her dance around the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.

Sometimes I hate men.

Man, I always had issues with that. Because on the one hand, why the fuck should I give birth if I don't want to?! My body, my choice, right? Being forced to go through with a pregnancy takes away my freedom and that is not acceptable.

On the other hand...I met a couple of the fathers. Most don't care or if they do care they tend to agree with the abortion but there's a few who want the child so badly. I hate that I can see their point of view but I can. Their argument is that it's only nine months out of the mother's life and then she never has to see the baby again but they want it.

So yeah...I don't think there should be a law which pretty much forces a woman to continue an unwanted pregnancy but I do feel sorry for the few men out there who are as hurt by the termination as a woman would be by being pressured into having the child.

sure, i feel sorry for 'em. it's tough to suddenly find out that you might be a father and then have that taken away.

maybe next time they might wanna be a little more careful with the contraceptives. nobody ever tried and tried to get pregnant and then suddenly decided to abort - all abortions are accidental pregnancies (or medical, but we shouldn't even be discussing those, those should be totally automatic). and properly used birth control can prevent almost all pregnancies.

if there's, like, four guys in the world out there that protected themselves the best they possibly could and still the chick got knocked up and still she decided to abort and those guys STILL really wanted the kid, well. i feel sorry for those four guys. that's super rough and i wish them big families in the future.

the rest of the guys got no leg to stand on.

I say as long as the father wants to bare and raise the child he can have it. Notice he has to able to actually birth the child and go through all the health risk himself. Don't think this will ever pass, at least in Ohio since Ohio is a University and College filled state.

So, I was lurking (shocker!) and I came across this.

People like you make me happy. Too bad there are so few of you in the world.

I almost got into a physical fight with a boy from the sociology department last month when he suggested that these types of laws were helpful because they were designed to protect women (when I asked him from WHAT exactly, he actually said "from themselves"). Fucking dillhole. He is part of the reason why the world depresses me.

y'know, i think a lot of people just don't GET it. i think they don't understand how offensive it is, how retarded a solution like that is. i mean, i was always against anti-abortion laws, but i couldn't really articulate WHY until i read up on the subject, so i think it's important to keep talking about it until everybody understands.

and if they do understand and they still wanna tell us what to do with our abdomens then we punch 'em in the mouth.

I did a lot of writing on this in undergrad and I couldn't believe some of the misinformation there was out there. People just sit around going "OH ABORTION IS LEGAL, IT'S EASY TO GET!" There's a huge difference between legality and actual access to the service - both in the US AND Canada. I got depressed when I started doing the research because I realized that the way things were going (and are going now), even if it cotinued to be legal, it was going to get harder to get one in the future. A lot of it has to do with the medical profession actually.

For example, people complain about "late term" abortions in the US, questions like "why doesn't she just get it earlier! It's her own fault for being indecisive!" I think it was something like 87% of non-emergency late term abortions were performed on women living below the poverty line (in the states that allowed them). It costs money to get an abortion and to travel to an abortion clinic if you don't live close to one (and there aren't nearly as many as people tend to beleive). But no, it's just because they "can't make up their mind!"

People just don't know what the hell they are talking about, instead they just spout the mysoginstic ridiculousness that is often passed off as "fact". What really kills me are the pro-life women that have had abortions and argue that they somehow have some EXTRA legitimacy because they had one and regretted it horribly. That's like me saying, "hey, I ate a pickle. I regretted eating that pickle, therefore pickles should be outlawed because one of you might eat one and regret it too! I'm saving you from pickle regret - you should be thanking me!" Riiiight.

For me it just comes down to bodily integrity. I don't have any damn right to tell a woman or a man what they can and can't do with their bodies. I think people have the right to make their own damn medical decisions and everyone else can just fuck right off. Between this and the pharmacists that won't distribute birth control or the morning after pill... I just want to facesmash.

What is it about being a woman that makes people think that we can't make our own decisions? Owning ladybits doesn't make me stupid or mentally impaired, y'know?

Ok, sorry. I kinda ranted. Ok, embarrassed. :S
