gmail

You'll all pardon me, I hope, for this unseemly display.

Would someone kindly explain to me what in the world the big screaming deal is with gmail? Everyone and their dog is all crazy in the pants about this, and I'm really not sure why. Sing the praises, convertees. Why's gmail stalking around the playground, beating up yahoo and hotmail for their lunch money?

Frankly, I tried Gmail, I was unimpressed, and I have serious issues with them using my stored emails as a searchable database. I'm prefectly happy to stay with Yahoo now that I have 100MG of space.

1) 1 gigabyte of storage -- Yahoo upgraded everyone to 250MB in defense but it's still only 25% of the space of Gmail

2) threaded e-mail -- so not only do you not have to delete anything, you can sort it all easily too

3) the ability to attach huge files -- and, to actually store them in your e-mail too :-)

It runs nicely too and relatively fast -- although, that may change when it's out of beta and more people are using it. It still has a few things that could be improved, but it's more than functional right now.

Also, though it has sidebar ads, they're all text-based, and no ads in your actual outgoing e-mails. (And the sidebar ads are fun to watch, because they're context-dependednt. Most of mine these days are for Buffy products. Amusingly, the quickest way to get no ad-links at all is to use the actual word "porn" anywhere in an e-mail.) And no "If you don't log in this month, we'll delete all your e-mails, unlike hotmail's free service.

GMail does have a couple twists and what could be a downside if they don't fix it -- the threading feature is cool for actual e-mail conversations, but the fact that it threads LJ comment notifications that have nothing to do with each other, but obviously all come from "lj-notify@livejournal.com" and have the same subject line of "Reply to your comment" is a pain in the ass.

Every time you send a gmail an angel gets its wings. Which is fantastic for the environment since otherwise they use jet packs and burn off thousands of litres of fuel.

Hee. I broke down and asked someone a few days ago and they sent me an invitation. I have since renounced hotmail.

Mostly, it's the space. But there's also the 'label' function, which I like better than folders because a single email can have more than one label. I don't actually with the 'never delete anything' idea, because I don't want to keep every piece of dren that gets emailed to me. But I can now easily keep everything that I want to keep and keep it as organized as I want to. I like it a lot, so far.

I still have an invite if you want it.
GMail is great especially for those friends you have email conversations with. Love the threaded feature and the search function.

I mainly got it because I got sick of my hotmail not sending mail to people who use yahoo. I mean whats up with that? Honestly!

I have invites too if you want to try it. :)

Uh, Winter? I hate to be the bearing of bad tidings, and you may already know this, but you apparently lost all your bookmarked memories in last night's lj weirdness.

Uh... okay, THAT'S wierd.

I see the NUMBER of entries, but not the actual entries themselves. And they're still sortable. Freakin WIERD, man.

Does anyone else have this problem? Should I be emailing tech support? *chases after own brain*
