and then, i'm told it makes some people very upset because the show is, apparently, JARED AND JENSEN'S. and not sandy's. apparently, her costume is slutty. apparently, having the girlfriend on set makes it harder to keep her in a seperate mental block from the holy sanctum of the sacred jsquared. apparently, the fact that she has sex makes her unclean or incapable of doing her job as an actress.

because fandom has been using and abusing this term like nobody's business lately, let me PSA for the masses, okay?

The secret signals were designed to communicate availability, positional preference, etc. I would love to tell you I was kidding with regard to this matter but I am not; people actually believed this.

The way (parts of) SPN fandom as a whole treats women is starting to ... god, it's starting to grate. Apparently, to be respected tolerated you must a) dress/act like a nun and b) live in a black hole - where you may be neither seen nor heard, only mentioned on very brief occasions. People have been tossing degrading words like 'slut', 'bimbo', and 'whore' around like they're nothing and I just ... FUCK, Danny, sometimes I just want to reach through the screen and throttle these people. Yeah, I'm kind of sensitive. Every time a woman calls another woman these things, kittens die. And that is NOT GOOD.

Hell, I'm looking forward to Sandy being on the show. And I usually get weirded out by actors' significant others appearing on their shows (more 'cause it makes me go ooh! so-and-so's girlfriend! ;) - maybe takes me out of the moment), but I think I make all the exceptions in the world for Jensen and Jared. :P So, yeah. Little weirded out, but I'm still psyched about it, for various spoilery reasons. :)

The most surefire way to get me to get even MORE psyched about something is to say something asshatty about it. Saying she looks slutty? Yeah, that makes me want to love the idea more. *glares at the world*

Wow. This is... wow.

I'm having a really hard time with the way many fandoms treat/talk about women. And I'm trying hard to figure out whether it's just particular fandoms, or whether it's a development across the board in recent years. I'm seeing things in the SPN and Smallville fandoms that are deeply discouraging to my liberal, feminist heart... it's just so bad in comparison to the Farscape fandom, when Ben Browder's wife would periodically turn up in guest roles, and the fans were always positively delighted to see her. Whenever there was a con appearance, someone was certain to ask, "Hey, when's Fran coming back? Can't you make her a regular or something?"

Again, I'm not sure whether it's a particular fandom thing, or whether it's a societal sea change. And I really hope that it's just particular fandoms, although on my more depressed, "What the hell is wrong with people???" days, I think it's part of a larger pattern of backlash against women.

Sandy is just in a guest role, right? One episode? Why is everyone being an asshat about it? They show is still about the boys, they have a thing that can't be broken. They have too much on-screen chemistry and fen have been so vocal to Kripke about their plans to smack a bitch if the two new regular girls they have on the docket break that up, that Kripke had to make numerous public assurances that it wasn't going to ruin the dynamic we all love. I mean, I love the boys as much as the next fangirl, but they have to interact with someone sometime or there wouldn't be a story for the show to tell. So what if it is JP's girl, she's a professional, as are the boys, if they can handle it, so can we. If she turns out to do a poor acting job, then I'll complain.

Also, someone mentioned that the fangirls are starting a trend of treating the actresses like shit when they supposedly get in the way of our sekrit love affairs with male actors. I have also noticed this trend (re: Weir-hate and especially Carter-hate in the SG-1/SGA fandoms) and this puzzles me. The fen demographic is overwhelmingly female and dominantly liberal. Shouldn't we be the ones who protest when female characters aren't used to their full potential on-screen and sometimes degraded as mere sex symbols? Ladies, let's get our heads out of our posteriors please. This is an issue that we should be fighting against, not perpetuating!
