I figure yes. Even mediocre hotels sometimes have small coffee pots in the rooms, and even if Dean and Sam stay in cruddy hotels some of the time, there must be times they stay at places like Holiday Inn or whatever. Plus, coffee pots are easy to work. Dump in grounds, add water, push button. If Dean knows how to clean and load a gun, surely he can make coffee?

Date: 2006-10-13 08:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] winterlive.livejournal.com
well, yes, but coffee you make in a hotel room is infinitely inferior to coffee you can get from coffee shops. and he eats out all the time anyway, so why not get the coffee while he's there?

myself, i chose yes. why? because i figure that, SOMEWHERE in america, there is a barista that, in the name of flirting, explained it. and she was hot, and it really is easy, so he remembers. :D

In addition, CLEARLY, he had to know how to work the hotel coffee pot for those times when John really was hung over, and they couldn't go to a diner, because Dean was too wee to drive.

Even in Bumfuck, Nowhere, there are nearly-24-hour diners.

I figure since Dean has been the pseudo-Mom from a young age and the dispenser of Spagettios and sugary cereals, he has also made the coffee whenever Dad stumbles in. Or uncapped the beers, or whatever.

concievable! making coffee vs. getting coffee, though... hmm.

Absolutely. Dean knows everything he needs to know to keep him alive, to survive on his own.

What? It's caffeine! That's like air!!

but there are always coffee shops omg.

i think a case could be made for john teaching him how when he was a kid - basic survival skills. :)

Huh, I am wondering where this idea of John as a drunk comes from, but okay.

Dean totally can make coffee, but why should he? There are always diners with waitresses that'll flirt with him & sometimes even more. He can't get that out of a hotel coffee pot. *g*

What you said. I do tease him about being a little wolf boy but there's a huge difference between *can* do it and *want* to do it.

For example, he is fully capable of displaying social skills. He just doesn't want to.

Yeah he totally does, because when they lived in that one town, when Sammy was just a freshmen and they went to the same school for about 3 months, Dean got up early enough to make two pots before they drove to school.

Yes, and this is why: Mommy!Dean.

I think Dean was the family "caretaker" from a loooong way back, and the painfully early competent child. This would have been one of so many things he knew how to do that most kids his age wouldn't or shouldn't.

Date: 2006-10-14 04:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] winterlive.livejournal.com
god, it hurts my soul any time anybody calls him the mother of the family. he would be so fuckin angry. not to say that the job description isn't similar, but phrasing it that way implies that he CAN take on that role. that mary is replaceable. and in this family? jesus, i wouldn't want to be the one to say that. i wouldn't even want to be in the ROOM.

as i've said above, though, i think if he does know how, it for sure is because john taught him how when he was younger. i mean, if you're teaching your kid how to handle a shotgun, adding coffee-making to the roster is pretty innocuous.

danners, the general gist from room whatever the hell number this is is that yes, dean can use a coffee pot, if only because now there are coffee pots in hotel rooms.

otherwise, no, dean would be strictly a get the coffee and run kinda guy.

Date: 2006-10-14 04:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] winterlive.livejournal.com
bunners.

1. there are coffee pots in YOUR hotel rooms, because your hotel rooms are (by winchester standards) expensive.

2. even when there ARE coffee pots in the kind of hotel rooms they go to, drinking out of them is like taking your life into your hands.

3. despite both of the above, we have seen dean DRINK coffee from a hotel coffee pot, in salvation (thx to [livejournal.com profile] wolfling above) but john was there, and while i think john is likely to know how, i think dean's more likely to just go to starbucks.

4. I HARTH BUNNERSES.

Dude. How can this even be a question? Dean built an EMF detector from a Walkman. He ostensibly repaired the Impala by himself. He was heating food up on the stove since he could reach it. Of course he can make coffee. In fact, I suspect any time they stayed in a house instead of a hotel that Dean made the family coffee every morning, or set the timer on it and made it the night before.

Date: 2006-10-16 03:33 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] winterlive.livejournal.com
i bet he could BUILD a coffee pot, if he put his mind to it. or a tv. or a transistor radio. but HAS he, is the question.

maybe john would have asked dean to make coffee in an actual coffee pot if they stayed in an actual house, in an attempt to have a real life, y'know? hmm! that's certainly possible. wouldn't that be neat, if dean connected making coffee with having a home? i would draw hearts.
