Because crazydiamondsue asked, this is your superfast get-up-to-speed on Veronica Mars. Spoilers to 2x06, Rat Saw God.
*gets on the couch, grabs some popcorn*
Okay. That's Veronica Mars. She's our heroine. People have a habit of saying her full name all the time, we don't know why. She's high school girl by day and junior private investigator by night. Not that she gets paid or anything. Veronica's poor - but, y'know, TV poor. Meaning she has her own car and an state of the art laptop and the coolest cell phone I've ever seen. Anyway. She's totally cool, that's all you need to know. She snarks and she's supersmart. She has a taser and a dog named Backup.
That's Keith Mars, Veronica's father. He's a single dad - Veronica's mom is an alcoholic who keeps stealing Veronica's money. Don't ask. Kieth's the real PI in the family, the one with the business. He taught Veronica about sleuthin'. He's the king of all fathers. Keith Mars can do no wrong. We love him. He used to be sheriff, but he got kicked out by the town because he went after a rich guy. He ran again, even, against the current sheriff, but he lost. The competition played dirty. But that's Neptune for you.
Just so you know, the other Sheriff, Don Lamb? He's an incompetent bastard that shouldn't be allowed to touch a gun. And he's mean and a huge jerk. Oh, God, I love him so much. Hi, Michael Muhney! *waves*
Okay. That's Wallace Finnell. Wallace is Veronica's best friend. He's away with his birth father right now, poor guy. It was very traumatic. Lord only knows what'll happen to him when he comes home. He and Veronica aren't really talking. Veronica uses him to help her solve cases, and he got kind of resentful before he left because she's never there for him, which is totally true. Sigh, Wallace. Sigh. Come home! Wallace's mom and Keith are dating, which makes Wallace and Veronica kind of like siblings. They think it's gross and Wallace has sidekick issues, but only with a small "i". He's pretty cool. In fact, I kind of feel like a skeeve for saying this - because Logan owns my soul - but Percy Daggs is one DAMN fine looking man, yis. Mmm.
Ooh, ooh: that's Duncan Kane. Duncan is Veronica's boyfriend. Last year his sister Lilly was murdered, and that was the big mystery. She and Veronica were best friends. Duncan has kinda-sorta-epilepsy? It makes him wierd if he doesn't take his pills, but he does now. There was a scare there where we thought Duncan killed her for a while, but it turns out he was totally innocent the whole time.
The only jerk saying otherwise is Aaron Echolls, who actually killed Lilly. Aaron's older, in his forties, a movie star. They were having an affair. Lilly was kind of a wild child. She was actually dating his son, Logan.
That's Logan Echolls. Logan is the best part of this whole show, and I say that as a fangirl and a slasher. I love Logan more than I love Keith, and that's saying something. He and Veronica dated for about five minutes at the end of last season, and most people want more more more more, even though they're snarking at each other again. Logan and Duncan are best friends (that's an OT4 right there, before Lilly died, and then some wierd incesty things going on, it's just wierd omg but very cool.) He's the biggest jerk of anyone on this show, and he's broken inside and his dad screwed and then murderered his girlfriend and his mom committed suicide last season and his sister (Alyson Hannigan!) is a total train wreck and the PCHers burned down his house. (ETA: Oh, and he's been arrested for murdering a PCHer, and he can't remember if he did it or not because he was drunk. We don't know either.) Logan is AWESOME.
The PCHers? They're a biker gang led by Eli "Weevil" Navarro, who goes to school with our heroes. He promised his grandma he'd graduate, so he's going to school, even though he doesn't want to. He and Veronica are friendly, kind of. They've helped each other out of scrapes and they talk. But Veronica's dithering between being a Have and a Have Not in Neptune, and Weevil thinks she better pick a side. She'll have to soon, this is true. Anyway, Logan bought Weevil's grandma's house in retaliation for the fire and is gonna foreclose, and Lilly was stepping out on Logan with Weevil when she was alive. So they hate each other. See icon. I love Weevil, too. Weevil's awesome. Not as awesome as Logan, but pretty awesome. (Note: Weevil's played by Francis Capra, who's actually Frank Capra IV. Hollywood royalty. And also smokin'. Rawr.)
There's a sort of opposing group to the PCHers, they're the Haves, if you will. The cool kids. They're called the 09'ers (oh-nine-rs), because they live in the 90909 zip code. The most notable 09'ers are a pair of brothers named - I'm not even kidding - Dick and Cassidy "Beaver" Casablancas.
So! Almost everyone's parents are gone. Logan's parents are dead or in jail. Dick and Beaver's father (affectionately referred to as Big Dick, still not kidding) and their stepmother are on the lam because Big Dick was running a real estate scam, but they haven't been prosecuted. And Duncan's parents are in Aspen, recovering from Lilly's murder and avoiding the papparazzi. Now that Logan's father's mansion burned down, Logan's living with Duncan in the presidential suite of the Neptune Grand Hotel. (I don't need to say it, right? Right? Duncan's hot too. Dear God, I'm such a slut in my head.) But Keith's still around, and the most perfect father ever.
A school bus went off a cliff in the first episode of season two, killing a bunch of Neptune students and hospitalizing Duncan's ex. There was definitely foul play involved, and Veronica's convinced it was aimed at her. Veronica, naturally, was the one to catch Lilly's killer, so he's trying to have her snuffed from prison, or so it seems. I'm not convinced. It's all very mysterious. Because, hello: it's a mystery show. And a damn fine one, at that.
So there you go. Questions? Comments?

How MUCH did that episode rock? Totally totally rock. There was Joss and my twists and turns and "I wanted to show you how easy it was to get to you" and OMGILOVEKEITHMARS

I loved that episode with my whole soul. I actually got up early this morning to watch it before work. *twirl*
