so about the health care thing. mon amie
traveller pointed out that my last post on the matter might have seemed a bit harsh or sneery, so i thought i'd explain my position on it a bit.
i have a friend who lives in the states, and she's got two pre-existing conditions that mean no insurance company will insure her. she can't get meds and has to budget for when she's going to see her doctor, and she's a risk to hire or keep employed because she can't afford to get better. one of my american pals has to work at a job that's making her sicker because, if she doesn't, her deductible on prescriptions will spiral out of control. one friend had to pay a thousand dollars for a fucking ER visit, and another once went six years without seeing a doctor because she had no insurance.
i work in community health in canada and every single day i see my co-workers fight to keep people with mental illness or chronic disease from falling through the cracks - and that's in a system that's FREE. i can't even imagine our clients trying to manage insurance on top of that, and by themselves, no less. it's horrifying and unfair, and the teensy step that obama was able to squeak out of congress is SOMETHING, but it's not enough to remedy that. you know where i'd be without a public option? dead in a gutter.
so. like. i get all het up.
anyway. sorry if any of you were offended off the other thing, i didn't mean to. i just want you to have all the good things you deserve. unless you're one of those that thinks obamacare socialism is going to ruin your life, in which case i wish you luck. maybe.
