winterliveyeah, he called her a slut. i didn't like that. you know what i did like, though? when she BEAT HIM BLOODY FOR IT. that's not misogyny, people, that's fucking poetic.
is the word slut pretty friggin hideous? yes. i would like for them to never use that word again. could they have dean never say it again on television and still be balls-out masculine? ask john wayne, you pansies. of course they could.
but if you're asking me if supernatural is all crazy misogynist because one character uses bad words... uh, no. that's dumb. there are wretch societal overtones that you always get with network television. of course. but those same issues were on every goddamn show we've all loved since the beginning of time, so i would really really REALLY appreciate it if people would stop implying that supernatural is the worst offender on prime time today, because it isn't. not by a very, very long shot.
it isn't even BAD, by comparison to its contemporaries - in fact, if you want to put supernatural's ratio of asskicking women up against any other show on TV right now, i'd be delighted to see it. the only one i can think of that beats SPN out hands down is battlestar galactica, which is not network, and which i am counting as a win despite the fact that president laura recently told her top aide to whore herself for information - as revenge. i would say ABC's boston legal for ringer candice bergen, who's unquestionably awesome, but sadly there are only two other women on the show, both strongly resemble a bag of antlers, and one of them runs a high priced brothel as a home industry. FAIL. what else you got, network TV? heroes: the only regular female characters outside the 20-30 year old supermodel pastiche are: a cheerleader, an ex-vegas stripper and interesting machiavellian genius angela petrelli - who's dead now. you wanna do gray's anatomy? gossip girl? i could keep going.
and just for the record, ladies? let's just ever-so-briefly glance at the stats for fans of these shows, and how often they COMPLETELY FREAK OUT when anybody EVEN MENTIONS bringing a girl on for any length of time. norms noticed us, okay? i had friends come up to me and go, what's wrong with those two girls they're bringing onto that show you like? i hear everybody hates them and the season hasn't even started yet. and it took everything i had not to tell them that people were shrieking, BITCHES TAKE SCREEN TIME AWAY FROM BOYPARTS, because that was the real reason for 80% of the objectors, let's not lie. sure, okay, networks hate women and so the likelihood that we'd get useless T&A instead of real plot was pretty sucky...
only wait. ruby and bela... weren't love interests. and they kicked ass and took names. okay, they were really bitchy. i mean, ruby was trying to get sam to give into the dark sidePLUS she shot him, and bela was selfish [PLUS she shot sam] and fucked over our changes of getting dean out of his deal by stealing the... colt...
sorry. i got wrapped up in all the plot.
put it to you this way: i certainly won't cry if the next girl that comes onto supernatural looks like she maybe ate breakfast at some point in her life (GET WHITNEY THOMPSON IT'LL BE GOOD PROMOTION NNNNNGH SO HOT DEAN HIT IT HIT IT HIT IT) but seriously, if you look at our asskicking track record, i think we're doing pretty damn good.
and in the meantime, just so you know, i'm keeping a list of everybody who uses the words slut, whore, bitch, etc. to cut down girls they don't like here in fandom. one day i'll publish it as a book, and also all those people's essays on why supernatural's so unforgivably misogynistic. side by side.

in other news, as part of my epic failure to resist writing comics fanfic, i've spent most of my time at the Robb & Stucky website, furnishing the AU Luthor estate in hawaii. gnnnngh. WANT.
