for several reasons i am watching all the martial arts/japan oriented movies i have ever loved or meant to watch. in the last few days i've rewatched hero (the one with jet li) and crouching tiger, hidden dragon - i know they're both set in china, and i do not care because they are awesome. also on the list is equilibrium, because a) i am shallow and christian bale is hot, and b) GUN KATA. it's totally fake and i love every second, woo.

but the important thing here is that i watched memoirs of a geisha last night, and ohhh ken watanabe. mister chairman, i draw little hearts around you. i handwave the age difference and i press you to my bosom because YOU, my friend, are awesomecakes.

what's your favorite movie in this vein? :)

mmm chicken shawarma. i love the downstairs cafeteria - i can get chick peas any time i want and SHAWARMA, okay? rarrr.

ETA: and oh, hey, if anybody out there happens to actually SPEAK japanese, or kind of know it, i have wish to speak with you. thanks to the miracle of lj, i have two experts at my fingertips. <333

house of flying daggers wasn't the awesomest in terms of plot, but it was incredibly beautiful. if you like jet li, fearless is lovely, and [the storm riders (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165499)] is a good romp.

i keep meaning to see the last samurai for ken watanabe, and memoirs of a geisha for zhang ziyi, gong li, and him. :)

i have access to people who speak fluent/near fluent japanese, so if no one else comes forth, perhaps i can be of some help?

oooo yaye.

KEN. ken is my own. i may decide to just carry him around in my pocket from now on. zhang ziyi really could not be more hott and gong li too is effing lovely - if you ever stood the two of them next to michelle yeoh i might just die.

*notes movies and offer* thank you, my pineapple. you are smartest.

your icon is v. lovely - i wish it was the cherry blossom festival, now. (and, also, because then it wouldn't be like 11 degrees here. grrr.)

there's an exceptional retelling of king lear done with samurais, and sons instead of daughters directed by akira kurasawa called ran, which is quite stunningly good.

Jay speaks Japanese.

House of Flying Daggers is my favourite of such movies, for the love scene in the field, which seemed both romantic and true, and still gives me a wistful rush when I see it.

OOH flying daggers. you are the third person thus far to say that one to me, so i will definitely check it out.

and i know jay speaks japanese but if i asked him he'd want to know what i needed it for and i would have to EXPLAIN, to JAY, and just, no. that is more shame and mockery than i'm prepared to endure for the sake of a story. :) but thank you!

I lived in Osaka for 18 months shortly after I got out of college. I love Japan! My fave movie is actually Black Rain, which is a terrible movie, but was filmed in Osaka so I have fun seeing places I used to go.

I know just the most basic of survival Japanese, e.g. "I'd like a big beer, please" followed quickly by "Where's the bathroom?"

Damn you, now I want shawarma.

Oh, Ken. I love Ken. He's so ... Ken.

My favourite Japanese movie is probably Returner, a time-travel deal with the very pretty Takeshi Kaneshiro strutting around in a lot of black leather. :D

Ken is totally hotter than the universe. GO SEE 'LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA'!!!!!!!

*ahem*

Uh, in the vein of Japanese movies, Kurosawa is REQUIRED viewing. There is no one hotter than Tishiro Mifune (except maybe Paul Newman). Rashamon, Seven Samurai, Throne Of Blood, Yojimbo... God.

Also, Crouching Tiger wins at life just because it paired Chow Yun-Fat & Michelle Yoeh. (And Curse of the Golden Flower paired Chow Yun-Fat & Gong Li, which really SHOULD have been illegal, because they melted the goddamn screen, Jesus).

Hmm.

I've mentioned "Grave of the Fireflies" up the wazoo, and it's extremely sad, but wow, is it ever amazing. I also just saw "Letters from Iwo Jima," which also has Ken Watanabe in it, and it too was sad and amazing.

I've heard very good things about "Ran," but never actually seen it. Supposedly anything Kurosawa ever did is golden, including "The Seven Samurai." My Japanese teacher (which I'm actually going to in about half an hour) is a big fan of Japanese horror flicks.

Also, one word for you: moshi. Japanese ice cream. Soooo good.

That, and I've recently become vaguely obsessed with the idea of writing a Dru-fic centered around her being a Gothic lolita in Kyoto.

Did you ever see Ghost Dog? Not exactly a Japanese martial arts film, but it's a really good film in the same vein. Basically it's about this black man who's adopted the ways of the Samurai and uses them working for the mafia.

I'm explaining it badly, but when Kris (yes that one) and I saw it, he commented that it reminded him a lot of The Professional as well.

have you ever seen Heroic Trio? it's one of my faves. the sequel, Executioners, isn't bad, but it's not as good. that was one of my first favorite martial arts movie, back when I got into Michelle Yeoh big time.

also, Ong Bak: Thai Warrior is just insane, that guy is going to be huge on the level of Jet Li pretty soon here, I predict. he just needs to get in a movie with a decent compelling plot.
