misogyny on supernatural? )

in other news, as part of my epic failure to resist writing comics fanfic, i've spent most of my time at the Robb & Stucky website, furnishing the AU Luthor estate in hawaii. gnnnngh. WANT.

annnd over at [ profile] misspamela's, she is hosting the fandom hot 20! go pick your top three hottest fictional characters of all time (omg that is hard) and list them in a comment. pam'll make a poll when all's said and done. get crazy!

so, okay, so. apparently there's been a bunch of meta lately on how supernatural has treated women in a misogynistic and unfair way, particularly in the witch episode, malleus maleficarum.

speaking as a long-standing feminist and pagan, i had absolutely zero problems with that episode. but i don't really feel like getting into it, because i'm really seriously cognisant that it'll mean a huge discussion and i won't change any minds and nobody's going to change mine.

luckily for me, however, [ profile] crossroads_lore has drafted up an essay on how it's possible to interpret the events of malleus maleficarum in a non-evil way - not that you MUST believe what she says, but just as a potential alternative take on it. Considerations (In Defense), i'll shorten the name to, and if you'd like to take a look, here you go. i fully agree with everything she says.

yaye, timesaver.
Hi, everybody!!

That poll I put up - over 50 volunteers. You guys are incredible. (I almost used a cuss word right there, but saved it just in time.) I am totally over the moon. The best part is the name. Y'all ready?

The No Stairway Anthology - [ profile] nostairway

I love the name. I ain't even gonna front. :)

The first post in that community is our guidelines and overview, so please give those a read if you're interested. As I said before, things have changed a lot since we started talking. Even now they're pretty rough draft - it's only been two days - but we've got a pretty good idea of how things are going to go. If you have any questions, [ profile] maygra and I have open posts. (Hers is here.)

As a side note, I'm aware that there are folks who maybe aren't the biggest fans of this idea, and that's a shame. But hopefully the guidelines will clear things up for them, because I'm definitely seeing a lot of misconceptions on those posts. In fact, why don't I go ahead and touch on some of the highlights?

As I see it, the benefits are twofold; for readers and for writers.

Each issue of the Anthology will hold a number of stories that have been screened for basic typos and grammar, and then passed by at least three editors. Those editors look for originality, innovation, use of language and pacing, anything that'd make a story grip a reader's attention. They look for stories that challenge and move us, stories that twist us up; their goal is to fill the Anthology, not pare it down. We'd like to showcase as many stories as possible. Each story is archived at a website - those of you who boycott LJ can still play - and a reader's guaranteed to be able to browse these stories whenever they want, in a format that's readable and clear. The editorial oversight board and administrators make sure that each issue has a range of stories, something to appeal to any taste.

And for the writers, first and foremost is that each story is assessed purely on its merits - all identifying information is stripped away before the editors even see it. Doesn't matter what your name is, you've got the same shot as anybody else. If your story is published to the Anthology, that'll mean exposure for not just your single story but all your works, because there's a link to your LJ or your IJ or your website, whatever you want.

The last benefit for writers is something we sort of snuck under the radar. Every single author who sends in a story has the option of recieving comments from the editors. Doesn't matter if you get published or not. Three objective editors will tell you what they think is good about what you wrote, and where you might be able to improve. It's not a line edit or a beta process - we have day jobs to think of! - but it's a quick summary that we hope will be helpful. You don't have to take it, of course, but I sure plan to. People with editing guidelines are going to look at my stuff and give me their honest opinion. I know nobody's going to tell me what I want to hear, and I also know nobody's going to be mean or catty about it. Dude. Awesome.

So that's us! Have a look over those preliminary guidelines, ask any questions you want. When things are finalized and ready to go, we'll have a big going-live party and you're all invited.

some pretty choice SPN meta going on right chea at [ profile] spnroundtable.

eta: you know your coffee's really the good coffee when, after taking a man-sized slug of it, you are forced to make a noise not unlike a birthing manatee.
i'm sure that when vividcon stuff came out a couple weeks ago that you all flooded over to [ profile] sisabet's to see that she had done a vid called falling for the first time. it was recced, it was lauded, and as it should be.

i know sisabet made this as a sam/dean vid, i mean. there's that footage by [ profile] shalott at the end, which is hott, no denying. and it completely works from that perspective, just as intended. but watching it for the elevenhundredth time, i am struck again with how much this song's pairing can be read a whole different way.

when i found supernatural, man, it had been a long, long time since i fell in love with a tv show. it had been forever since i had been so consistently charmed that i was willing to overlook all manner of ridiculous plot device and exposition fairying. my godson gained three feet since the last time i loved a show hard enough to create on its behalf, to stay home from other things just to watch it, to brave the wilds beyond my flist to find really awesome fic/vids/art. and this show just had it ALL, man, it had everything i wanted in a fandom, in a show - it was epic and beautiful, it was full of humor and love and hard decisions, and. god, it'd just been a long, lonely time.

and then supernatural came, and it felt just like the first time i ever fell for a tv show. so to me, when i watch sisabet's vid, the pairing is kinda me/supernatural, y'know what i mean? :)

[ profile] soundingsea gives us five reasons to avoid supernatural (and why they're wrong).

AH HAH. i have been waiting for somebody to write up something like this for a while now. do you have any idea how hard it is to get one's intellectual friends into supernatural? people, i know we've all been saying that supernatural fandom is all awesomecakes and everything, but seriously, we inherited the fen that made "spike fen" a phrase worthy of horror and revulsion, okay?

so. no, seriously, our show is good! promise! ack.
if you are not reading [ profile] hiyacunien, why in the world not? BOYS. <333

i'm so tired of seeing the canon regarding and surrounding john winchester abused* so thoroughly, but y'know. same old song. i wanted to do a kind of manifesto thing. maybe i still will. they don't have to love the old man like i do, but it'd be real nice if they would stop turning him into patris ex machina, omg.

i want these. and i shall have thems. precious.

*that is to say, john's character is being abused. people turn him into a drunk or an abuser or, most often, someone who just didn't care about those boys - leaving for months on end with no word, ignoring sam, what have you - just so they can justify the idea that dean and sam had nobody but each other when that is patently untrue in every canon idea of the winchester family we have ever encountered ever. argh.

[ this post ] says it very well.

as does, i hope, [ this one ].

so i really didn't feel the need to write another about this season three spoiler that has been around for months and months and which you've almost assuredly heard of ) when it'd just be the same song, but then something occurred to me.

don't click if you have magically managed to stay spoiler-free. )
why, god, why do people insist on killing dean's joy of hunting? if there's one thing i don't get about a lot of spn fic, if there's one thing that makes me roll my eyes and sigh, it's dean written as secretly pining to be a 50's housewife. home! family! picket fences! a 9-5! people, i do not understand it*.

if i sit in my head and picture little dean saying "when i grow up i want to be a hunter just like my dad," it ends with little dean BEAMSHINING with PRIDE and saying "because that is the COOLEST JOB in the HISTORY OF TIME. steve mcqueen would KILL to have THIS JOB because it is TOTALLY AWESOME. my dad is AWESOME and one day i too will be AWESOME. bow hunting is an IMPORTANT SKILL."

i don't understand why people don't like that about dean, or don't dig it, don't believe it, i don't understand. i mean, cut for s2 finale spoiler, adis )

dude. loves. his. job.

*i do understand, however, that certain portions of spn fandom will now be desperate to write it.
proviso: this post was written entirely too late at night and with not nearly enough considerate loving kindness. it happens sometimes when my coffee-to-blood ratio is low. too low, in fact, to keep me from hitting the post button. ah well.

people, i swear to god, if you start writing letters to the cw telling them that you will not accept, nay, that you will CRUSADE AGAINST this leaked plot for season three of supernatural, i will hunt you down. and i will make you pay.

to clarify: i have not been spoiled. i don't want to be spoiled. if kripke has suddenly stapled "jo/dean 4eva" posters all over his office wall, if kim manners believes the best road to take with the show is for sam to suddenly develop the ability to fly, if dawn ostroff has gone completely off her meds and decided that really it'd be best if the show was jumped fourteen years in the future and recast, i do not want to know. i am not writing letters, neither should you, stfu. i mean, i can understand writing in to save a tv show from cancellation, but this?

i'm using dean's annoyed face for you, fandom. do not MAKE me bring sam's bitchface! IT IS STARTING TO SMELL LIKE TINFOIL IN HERE. FOR GOD'S SAKE GET A HOLD OF YOURSELVES.
